1. Probably the most important motivating factor is to figure out why you are exercising. I heard a commercial the other day for a big box gym, encouraging folks to join to “get swimsuit ready”. Of course, we all want to look good in a swimsuit, but that does not provide the long-term driving force for a lifestyle change. And while I think a little vanity is ok when it comes to fitness, becoming healthier, lowering cholesterol, being able to run with your dog or setting a positive example for your children are more long-standing motivating considerations. Figure out why being fit is important to you, and when you are grinding out that last set, you can reflect back on that reason and use it to push you.
2. I don’t have time. I can’t afford a gym. Let the justifications come. It may sound harsh, but it is reality. If something is important to you, you will find time for it. Exercise has to be a priority in your life or it will fall down your to-do list faster than putting away laundry. (Does everyone hate that as much as me?) It may mean waking up 30 minutes earlier or eating a quick meal at your desk, but it must be a priority or you will find every excuse in the book to push it back.
3. Have a plan. Nothing can kill your workout buzz faster than jogging confidently into the gym only to find yourself standing in the weight room like a deer in the headlights. Lifting weights can be intimidating, especially if you are new to the process. And even more so if you are a women. Yes, I know, I went there. If strength training is your mode of choice, hire a personal training to show you the ropes a few times before going it alone. If you like to dance, find a Zumba class. If your deepest desires have you breathing in fresh air, take your run outside. You get where I am coming from? Don’t join a gym and think by showing up, you’ll have success. Have a plan of action and follow through.
4. Don’t be afraid to try something new! Didn’t I just tell you to have a plan? And I still think you should, but don’t let that deter you from trying something different. I constantly recruit new participants into my Spinning classes; many of which have not rode a bike for decades. And most of them end up loving it. Something they may have otherwise overlooked is now their method for torching 300+ calories. Fitness trends are constantly changing, so keep trying something until it clicks, because eventually, something will.
5. Find what works for you. I can’t work out without music. Seriously, I will leave the gym if I forget my headphones. I know this about myself, and I accept it, so I take the time to throw an awesome playlist together on Spotify so that it is always on my phone and ready. Want some pre-made playlists? Here is a link to all of mine. Some people need a workout buddy, if you know this is you, find a trustworthy friend and make a pack to help each other reach your goals. If you are motivated by pretty scenery, pick the scenic running route and hit the pavement. It’s all about setting yourself up for success.
6. Get support. It seems as though, us mothers especially have trouble asking for help. Don’t be afraid to ask your significant other for support. Work out a schedule where they can take the kids for an hour while you hit the gym. It is important for you to take this time and speaking from experience, it makes you come back a recharged and better parent. If schedules just don’t line up, find a gym with child care. So many of them have quality care for a reasonable price. If that just isn’t in the budget, don’t let that stop you. Find other moms to meet up with at a park for a jog or take turns playing with the kids while you run through a park circuit like this one.
The perfect time to start a healthier lifestyle isn’t tomorrow or next week. It is today. Lace up those tennis shoes and start sweating. Invest in yourself. Your body and mind will thank you.
